Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are pleased to announce the implementation of MMSA Advisory Groups. These groups will be made up of small groups of students and one teacher who will serve as the advisor. MMSA Advisory Groups will meet on a weekly basis during school hours. The fundamental purpose of the MMSA Advisory Group is to serve as a support system for our students. Each group advisor will ensure that all students receive the best possible learning opportunities by engaging them in an ongoing process of problem solving and shared decision making. The groups are also designed to help students excel academically and personally. During each meeting, students will discuss problems and/or concerns that they are dealing with. Students will also discuss their goals, dreams and accomplishments.

In order for your child to receive the best benefit from the group, students will be required to maintain an organized student planner. This planner will serve as a communication tool for students, parents and teachers. Students were given planners at the beginning of the school year. If your child has misplaced his/her planner, a new planner can be purchased from Mrs. Blake for $4.00 each. Student planners can also be purchased from local retailers such as Target or Walmart.

Parents will be required to sign the planners every Thursday night. Planners will be reviewed weekly by the group advisor. Students will receive a weekly grade for their planners. We encourage all parents to actively participate with their child’s homework assignments. Parents may want to review homework assignments to check for things like neatness and accuracy.

We believe that the implementation of MMSA Advisory Groups will be an effective tool for our students, parents and teachers. Please sign and return the bottom portion of this letter on Monday, March 8, 2010.
